If you have more than one meta server in your mplayer.ini file, and one is offline, it could take quite a while for a server list to show. Do not fret if the server list does not show up right away. If you know how to edit your mplayer.ini file, then you will know how to comment out all servers except: [MetaServers] Server=TCP:216.18.240.2:6001 ; Redux
Except for 10 mins maybe once a month, this meta stays up 24/7 rock solid. You will always find the war server with this.

You will always find the war server with this. I never understood why they kept the metaservers going once the company ditched them. I thought it was simple enough for anyone who wanted a server used, to make its identity available for anyone to easily find, and then put on the known server list. Of cause then i found out that the red baron community was primarily about control, rather than advancement...have i ever mentioned my disdain for squads and squadies?

I don't know all the tech angles on this, but I agree with Hal about no metaservers. The list of servers, of which there are so very few, is good enough...I think.
I only fly two...practice is the Steam/GOG for me, and War@4. I would have the Alpine server listed, but I don't have time because of jobs.
Everyone can find and have the regular server files loaded by choice/need. Bah to metas!
edit: I have had my loading go to very slow... but I never knew why...now I know...and I was caught in this net because, as I mentioned somewhere else...I had all the metas listed when I did a clean install...not so clean it seems because of meta tech stuff

Meta servers is the easiest and most efficient way to make RB3D servers visible to pilots. As a server operator, all you have to do to make your server visible to all players is to register with the three meta-servers that are currently run by me, Rens and CJ. By registering on all three, we create a system with redundany because if one meta-server goes down, the other two still broadcast the server address. If CJ had registered his warWar@4 game server on my meta-server, the recent chaos that occured when his meta went down could have been avoided.
All the pilots need to do is to make sure that they have the addresses to the three meta-servers in their mplayer.ini file. This saves everyone the trouble of keeping an updated list of known servers with correct IP addresses.
I change my set of servers now and then, and whenever I do that all I have to do is register the new server(s) with the three metas. That is why you all can see them. Without the metas I would have to post the IP address and port number of the new servers on my RB3D web site and on public RB3D forums (then you also need to consider which ones are currently most used?). Even if I do that, it will take a while before all active pilots have noticed the change and updated their mplayer.ini file so that they can see the servers. This is a very inefficient way of communicating server addresses.
Maintaining an up-to-date meta server list in your mplayer.ini file is actually much less work than maintaining an up-to-date list of active servers. That is the reason why meta-servers were invented in the first place. I will stick to registering my servers on all available meta-servers. If you want to see them, make sure you have the following lines in your mplayer.ini file:
[MetaServers]
Server=TCP:rlgb.xs4all.nl:6001 ; Rens
Server=TCP:216.18.240.2:6001 ; CamelJock
Server=TCP:87.96.191.111:6001 ; Swordfish

[MetaServers] Server=TCP:216.18.240.2:6001 ; CJ Server=TCP:cloud-kit.nl:6001 ; Rens Server=TCP:88.129.57.5:6001 ;Swordfish

I agree with no metas. They had their place in the past when we had many more players and servers, but why not place the few servers we have now in our "Known Servers" list? We would no longer have to deal with the occasional offline meta due to problems (like Rens), or off for vacation, etc....and we won't have to deal with // those, or else put up with a delay in seeing the servers. I also wonder if the metas add a bit of play delay, since they add another point we have to go through? So, I wonder if the server ops would be willing to give us their server IP addresses so we can place in our Known Servers list? hilarious.
.... "problems (like rens)" .....
i got that IP address in 1993. my ISP changed owner, changed to their tech infra,
30 ( yes THIRTY ) years later.
so the IP changed. first time in 30 years. thats actually as long as there have been ADSL technology on this planet.
and that is to much change / a problem ?

Rens - I posted that when I lacked an understanding on how meta servers worked. I've removed my post. My apologies for offending you.
